Your wedding gown is more than a beautiful dress - it's your once in a lifetime dream come true, deserving of something extra special, like our “Dry Cleaning Elegance" care services. J’s exclusive "Drycleaning Elegance" service was specifically developed to address the special challenges involved in preparing and preserving these precious gowns, and it’s why we are world renowned for bridal gown cleaning, restoration and preservation. From the tip of your head piece to the hem of your gown, we inspect, test and analyze every inch of fabric and trim, and create a customized protocol for its optimum stain removal procedures, cleaning, hand finishing, preservation and packaging. J's Cleaners "Dry Cleaning Elegance" service includes preparing your bridal gown for long term storage in a Museum Quality™ archival box, the same acid free and Ph neutral chest used by The Smithsonian Institute. This textile conservationist approach to cleaning and storage is designed to protect the gown's integrity and to minimize oxidation and permanent damage.
J's Cleaners has a highly trained and qualified tailoring staff. Each one is experienced in working on the world’s finest couture gowns, and knows how to preserve the original workmanship, detail and flow that the designer envisioned. The tailoring department in our Third Avenue store was specifically designed to accommodate long trains and full skirted ball gowns. With oversized and multi sided mirrors, as well as luxurious seating for your mother or bridesmaids to share the experience with you, J’s is the ideal place to have your dress fitted in grace and style. If you prefer to be fitted in the comfort of your own home, we are happy to schedule an appointment for in home fittings. Of course, we can hand finish your dress prior to pick up or delivery to ensure that you look picture perfect on this all important day.
Schedule your first fitting at least 6 weeks before your wedding; you will need 2-3 fittings (1-2 for major alterations and one for fine tuning of the dress, bustle and other details). We will ask you to stand, sit, walk, simulate hugging, bending over and raising your arms to make sure you will be able to move with comfort and grace throughout the day. You also want to try and keep your weight stable from this point on, though we’ll adjust during each fitting to make sure you have a perfect fit. It is also critically important to have selected your bridal shoes and undergarments (especially your bra) prior to your first fitting, and be sure to bring them with you for each and every fitting. The only way to guarantee a perfect, couture quality fit is if all conditions are identical to those you plan on for your BIG DAY. We also recommend you avoid foods high in sodium on the days of your fittings and on your wedding day, as they can lead to bloating from fluid retention.
All alteration, pre-event pressing and Dry Cleaning Elegance services are available to your bridesmaids, groomsmen, groom, parents and guests. If you have out of town guests attending your wedding, we can make their life easier with our J’s by Mail service. They simply ship their wedding clothes (shoes and purses too) into us in advance of the date, and we will clean and press or simply press, and deliver their garments to them at their hotel. They can also call on us for same day cleaning and pressing, provided they get their clothes into one of our NYC locations before 9 AM
Hang your wedding gown by the loops inside the gown that are connected to the sturdier side seams, never by the fragile shoulder seams that can stretch or sag. Avoid storing your wedding gown in plastic bags or vacuum-sealed, plastic wrapped boxes. Plastic emits fumes that can yellow your bridal gown and trap moisture that can cause mildew. Choose a cleaning and preservation specialist who will personally process your bridal gown, and never one who sends your bridal gown away to be cleaned at a gown mill (similar to a puppy mill). Ask prospective cleaners what precautions they take to protect delicate trim and ornamentation on your wedding gown and how the cleaner guards against latent stains. Ask to inspect your wedding gown personally before it is put into the preservation box. Be sure the storage box is completely acid-free, museum quality archival lined, with unbleached fabric or acid-free tissue and has no plastic window or lining. Avoid storing your bridal gown in the attic or basement where there are extreme changes in temperature or humidity.
